Dr. Hugh Ross: From Montreal to Vancouver

While a student of Astronomy at the University of British Columbia, Dr. Hugh Ross had in mind the question of whether scientists can have a belief in God. Dr. Hugh went through an exploration about the bible and equated it with modern discoveries and philosophies. Being a young student and an astrophysicist, he came to believe that science and faith are not in conflict with each other.  With these findings, Dr. Hugh involved himself with lectures and seminars around the world.

It was Dr. Hugh Ross who instituted Reasons To Believe.  The organization explores planetary discoveries and the relationship of modern astronomy to God. Dr. Hugh shares about his journey on how being a scientist and a believer of God can actually be combined. His desire to study about religion began with the story of his father who was born and raised in Calvary, Alberta.

The father of Dr. Hugh was an efficient and smart student who showed an exceptional ability in math subjects. When Dr. Hugh’s grandfather died of war wounds during the First World War, Dr. Hugh’s father had no choice but to quit school. For some years, he worked as a cowboy at Alberta before moving to Montreal, Quebec. Dr. Hugh’s father was a professor then handling engineering and founded a hydraulics engineering business. Not long after the success of the business, his father had a swirl prompting him to lay off all his employees.  Dr. Hugh was four when the family decided to move to the British Columbia in Vancouver. Because of financial constraint, they were forced to settle in the poorest part of Vancouver, a place was said to be a refuge for settlers. Dr. Hugh Ross recalled how his father earned a lot of money back in Montreal. Unfortunately, the place did not have the best education system compared to the education system being offered in Vancouver.

Dr. Hugh Ross saw all the misfortunes that they had in another light. For him, the environment served well its purpose for offering a quality education. According to his father, the challenge of losing their wealth could not equal the kind of education that awaits their children. When Dr. Hugh reached the second grade, he and the other children had the chance to borrow books from the best libraries in the city.

Vancouver is a blessing to Dr. Hugh. Rainy season is quite popular in the city. Summer is short. This leaves them stuck in the library instead. It is no surprise why Dr. Hugh has become a book of norm, not only in science, but religion.
